As chemistry experiments go, it’s hard to top the Los Angeles Lakers, as we wrote yesterday. You can only imagine the kind of crazy interactions that go on between Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest, Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and D.J. Mbenga.
Kevin Garnett Motivates Rasheed Wallace By Any Means Necessary
↵But the Boston Celtics are pretty close. There’s the hyper-competitive nature of Kevin Garnett mixed with the, uhh, loopy nature of Rasheed Wallace. There’s the borderline OCD of Ray Allen mixed with the brashness of Paul Pierce. There’s the chip-on-their-shoulder mentality of Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins, mixed with the silly and, well, immature Glen Davis. It’s always fun to think about how these guys motivate each other.
↵Luckily, we have an idea of how Garnett motivates Wallace. Let’s just say he uses unconventional tactics.
↵↵Kevin Garnett also believed Wallace was critical to the Celtics postseason success, and he made it a point to tell him that.
↵“After the first game, I went to him in the shower and I said, ‘In order for us to beat this team, man, it’s going to take not just the starting five.
↵[...]
↵“I went to him personally, you know, he don’t really listen to a lot of people,” Garnett explained. “Sheed sort of goes by his own tune and he only respects a few, and I’m one of the very few that he listens to and that he respects.
↵↵To review: Garnett decided he had to talk to Wallace himself in the shower, because he knows Wallace doesn’t really listen to anybody. And it worked, at least for a game. As Garnett said:
↵↵“And I got into him a little bit. I rubbed him the wrong way a little bit.”
↵↵No pun intended. I think.
