Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Rod Barajas hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth to lift the New York Mets to a 6-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three-game set at Citi Field.
Rod Barajas Hits Walk-Off To Lead Mets Over Giants
Barajas ended with three runs batted in and his team-leading eighth and ninth homers of the season for the Mets, who have won two-of-three.
Ike Davis also went deep twice for New York and made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning to help preserve the win.
Mike Pelfrey allowed three runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings. Francisco Rodriguez (2-0) blew the save in the ninth for Pelfrey, but picked up the win.
John Bowker tied the game in the ninth with a pinch-hit, solo home run for the Giants, who came in having swept a three-game series at Florida.
Jonathan Sanchez surrendered four runs on seven hits in seven frames, but Sergio Romo (0-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up the game-ending blast.
Barajas came up with one out in the ninth after Davis drew a walk. He then grooved a Romo pitch down the left-field line, just over the fence to end the game.
Jose Reyes got the Mets going in the first with a bloop single to right- center field. Jason Bay then broke an 0-for-14 slump with an RBI double to deep-center for a 1-0 lead.
Davis gave the Mets a 2-0 on a one-out solo shot to right in the second. It was the first home run Sanchez allowed this season. The very next batter, Barajas, followed suit to left field for a 3-0 advantage.
The Giants pulled within 3-1 in the third. Eli Whiteside knocked a lead-off double to right, moved to third on Sanchez's sacrifice bunt and scored on Aaron Rowand's groundout.
Davis blasted his second of the night with two down in the fourth for a 4-1 Mets edge.
In the fifth, the Giants had runners on the corners with one down after Pelfrey's high throw trying to get Sanchez at first. Rowand then plated Whiteside with a double down the right-field line. Mark DeRosa pulled the Giants within a run with an RBI groundout.
Bowker came up with one down in the ninth and nailed a changeup down the right-field line off Rodriguez to tie the game. With two down and a runner on second after Rodriguez balked, DeRosa singled, but Luis Castillo made a game- saving dive to keep the ball in the infield to prevent the go-ahead run. Pablo Sandoval then fouled out to first, as Davis dove over the dugout railing to end the frame.
