In the opening bout of the main card of UFC 113 Alan Belcher survived the power punching of Patrick Cote to use a takedown directly onto his face to open up a rear naked choke for the submission win.
UFC 113 Results: Alan Belcher Submits Patrick Cote In Second Round
The first round featured Belcher using speed and kicks to stay away from Cote, who was returning from a major knee injury. Belcher also reversed positioning on the ground to spend the last portion of the round working from top dropping punches and elbows to open a cut by Cote’s right eye.
In the second round Cote started to get inside and land combination power punches to hurt Belcher and force him to fight backing up. Eventually Cote went for a single leg takedown and Belcher used the opportunity to pick him up and drive him down on the front of his face. It appeared that Cote was briefly knocked out by the impact and right away Belcher took his back and sunk in a choke to force Cote to submit.
Cote complained after the bout that it was an illegal spike that opened up the choke but the replay showed clearly that it was Patrick’s face and not the top of his head that took the impact, making the move completely legal.
