Mark Teixeira Cranks 3 Homers As Yankees Dominate Red Sox

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Mark Teixeira posted his third-career three home-run game and drove in five, as the New York Yankees used their potent offense to down Boston, 14-3, in the middle portion of a three-game set from Fenway Park.

Teixiera, who ended 4-for-6 and scored three runs, joins Lou Gehrig as the only other Yankees player to hit three home runs in one game against Boston. The “Iron Horse” did so on June 23, 1927.

Nick Swisher collected two hits and knocked in three runs for the Yankees, who have won the first two games in the series and six in a row overall. Francisco Cervelli went 3-for-4 and drove in five in the rout.

Alfredo Aceves (3-0) picked up the win after hurling one inning of scoreless relief despite leaving the game with a stiff lower back. CC Sabathia lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.

Darnell McDonald and Victor Martinez homered for the Red Sox, who have surrendered 24 runs in the two losses after winning four in a row over the Angels earlier in the week.

Clay Buchholz (3-3) was tagged in the loss for nine hits and six runs -- five earned -- with five walks in five full frames.

Heavy rains interrupted play for one hour, 14 minutes with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, and Sabathia -- who reached a 2-2 count on Martinez but failed to get in a final pitch before play was halted -- had to be taken out because of the delay despite a 6-3 lead.

Martinez fouled out against Aceves once play resumed.

The Sox threatened with runners on the corners and two outs in the sixth off Aceves until his exit with a stiff lower back, but Boone Logan fanned pinch- hitter Jeremy Hermida.

Teixeira opened the seventh with a blast inside the foul pole in right off Ramon Ramirez, then Ramirez left the game with triceps tendinitis for Scott Schoeneweis, who later gave up an RBI single to Swisher to make it 8-3.

The Yanks put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth, coming after two-run singles from Swisher and Cervelli.

Teixeira then launched a two-run shot over the Green Moster in the ninth off normal Red Sox outfielder Jonathan Van Every to make it 14-3 for the visitors and cap the rout.

New York came up with a pair of runs in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, then Boston responded in the home half with three runs, as McDonald stroked a one-out solo homer and Martinez clubbed a two-run shot.

Cervelli’s RBI single in the fourth knotted the score at 3-3, then a Teixeira solo blast and a two-run single from Cervelli put the Bombers up by three in the fifth.

Teixeira's previous three-homer games occurred on June 22, 2008 against Seattle with the Angels, and on July 13, 2006 at Baltimore when he played for Texas...With the victory, the Yankees have clinched the series win, their ninth in the first 10 series of the season -- a mark surpassed only twice in team history. They won 14 of their first 15 in 1928 and 11 of their first 12 in 1939...Prior to the game, the Yankees placed infielder Nick Johnson on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Kevin Russo from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
