In Progress: Padres, Astros Take It To Extra Innings In Houston

For more, check out our Astros blog, The Crawfish Boxes, and our Padres blog, Gaslamp Ball.

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Hunter Pence went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning, as the Astros took advantage of a pair of late errors from the Padres to avoid a three-game sweep at Minute Maid Park.

After Brandon Lyon (2-1) hurled a perfect top of the 11th, Jeff Keppinger led off the home half with a bouncer to third that Chase Headley threw away. Lance Berkman followed with base hit to left, and two batters later Pence hit a deep fly to left field out of Scott Hairston's reach to bring in the winning run.

Roy Oswalt had another quality showing, giving up three runs on six hits while fanning nine in an eight-inning start for the Astros, who had lost 11 of 12 coming in and also received a solo home run from Carlos Lee.

Tim Stauffer, starting in place of Kevin Correia (personal), scattered six hits and did not walk a batter in five scoreless innings and also hit a two-run double in San Diego's three-run fifth inning, but Heath Bell blew the save in the ninth thanks to an error by Jerry Hairston Jr.

Ryan Webb (0-1) was on the mound for both the 10th and 11 innings and took the loss, while Tony Gwynn had two hits and an RBI in the setback.

Back-to-back long home runs from Lee and Pence off Edward Mujica in the sixth cut Houston's deficit to 3-2.

David Eckstein hit a pinch-hit double in the away ninth but was eventually thrown out at the plate by shortstop Tommy Manzella on a grounder by Hairston Jr., whose throwing error allowed Lee to reach second leading off the bottom half.

Pence moved pinch-runner Kazuo Matsui to third with a groundout to second, and Pedro Feliz delivered a sacrifice fly to center off Bell to tie the game.

Oswalt set down 12 straight after Gwynn opened the game with a single, but the Padres got to the veteran righty in the fifth to break a scoreless tie.

Matt Stairs reached on a single and Nick Hundley walked before a groundout moved both runners into scoring position. After a pop out, Stauffer worked a 2-2 count and lined a double down the left-field line for a 2-0 lead. Gwynn followed with a dribbler up the middle to score Stauffer.

This was Stauffer's first start of the season. He made eight appearances out of the bullpen and gave up just one earned run in 18 1/3 innings...Correia was scratched due to the death of his younger brother on Saturday. He returned to San Diego on Sunday and it is uncertain when he will return to the team...Oswalt, who was 10-2 lifetime against the Padres coming in, has thrown a quality game in all seven of his starts this season...Astros manager Brad Mills was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing with plate umpire Alfonso Marquez from the dugout.
