I avoided mentioning Bruton Smith’s $20 million dollar offer to any driver that won both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 this year because, quite frankly, it was ridiculous.
Indy/Charlotte ‘Double’ Could Happen Next Year
↵Since the start time of the Indy 500 was so late, no driver could have run the 500 and made it to Charlotte in time for the 600. People seemed to bite, though, and the story got some unfounded publicity (and accomplished Smith’s goal of giving the 600 some free press).
↵But next year, it could happen.
↵During an interview with FoxSports.com’s Lee Spencer on Wednesday, new IndyCar chief Randy Bernard said he’s already discussed start times for next year’s races with Smith.
↵↵“We’re going to start at 11 o’clock for sure,” Bernard said -- then quickly backtracked with an infectious smile. “How about saying that we’re hoping to start the Indy 500 at 11 o’clock next year.”
↵↵So if Smith brings up talk of the hefty bonus for the “double” again next year, we’ll get back to you.
