Cahill (5-2) gave up just six hits and walked one while striking out four. The second-year starter retired 10 of the final 11 hitters he faced and lowered his earned-run average from 3.21 to 2.91.
Ryan Sweeney doubled, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in another for Oakland, which has alternated wins and losses over its last six games.
Ervin Santana (6-4) had his five-start win streak snapped after yielding five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and two walks in five innings for the Angels, who had won six straight before losing two of the final three in this set.
Santana came into the game with a 11-2 lifetime record against Oakland and cruised through the first three innings before issuing a leadoff walk to Daric Barton in the fourth with the score tied, 0-0.
Sweeney followed with a run-scoring double to right and scored later in the frame when Gabe Gross cued a ball off the top of his bat that served as a swinging bunt and stayed fair down the third base side.
Bobby Wilson's two-out RBI single in the fifth cut the deficit in half, but the A's tacked on three in their turn at the plate.
Cliff Pennington hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Barton's base hit. After a walk to Sweeney, Kurt Suzuki blooped an RBI single to left, and Kevin Kouzmanoff added a similar hump-back liner to center for a 5-1 game.
Jack Cust's sacrifice fly in the seventh scored Sweeney with the game's final run, as Andrew Bailey hurled a perfect ninth to seal the win.
