A report has emerged that the Atlanta Hawks have filled their head coaching vacancy. From Marc J. Spears at Yahoo! Sports:
Larry Drew Is Reportedly The Newest Coach Of The Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks have promoted assistant coach Larry Drew to become their next head coach, sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Drew has been a Hawks assistant for six seasons and has 16 years of coaching experience but has never been a head coach.Following the Hawks’ disappointing playoff loss, the team fired head coach Mike Woodson. Presumably, the Hawks hope to re-establish team chemistry by installing a well-liked coach who’s already familiar with the players.
Last month, our Hawks blog, Peachtree Hoops, took a look at potential head coaching candidates. Here’s what they said about Drew at the time:
Hiring from an assistant pool is tough because you just don't know how they'll be as a head coach. The Hawks have their own in Larry Drew, but does anybody know what kind of coach Drew would be after being Woodson's right hand man all these years? Nope.
