Ubaldo Jimenez Allows Season-High Three, But Rockies Top Blue Jays In Rain-Shortened Contest

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Carlos Gonzalez's solo homer in the fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-3, in a rain-shortened game at Coors Field.

Ryan Spilborghs went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Rockies, who snapped a three-game slide. Seth Smith, Miguel Olivo, and Clint Barmes each drove in a run for the victors.

Ubaldo Jimenez (12-1) picked up his MLB-best 12th win of the season despite giving up three earned runs for the first time all year. The right-hander also fanned six batters and walked five over six frames and saw his ERA jump from 0.93 to 1.16.

Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have dropped four of five. Lyle Overbay had two hits and knocked in a run in defeat.

Ricky Romero (5-3) lasted five innings in the start, allowing four runs on seven hits. He also struck out five and walked one in the loss.

The start of the game was delayed by 1 hour, 45 minutes due to rain. A steady rain continued to fall once the contest got underway. Low visibility and heavy rain forced the umpires to call the tilt after six innings.

Overbay’s RBI triple in the top of the second got the Blue Jays on the board, but the Rockies responded with two runs in the home half. Spilborghs hit a two-out homer to right to tie things up. Olivo followed with a single and crossed the plate on Barmes’ double for a 2-1 lead.

Toronto plated two runs in the third to go in front. Fred Lewis worked a one- out walk and scored on Hill's homer to left for a 3-2 edge.

Colorado, though, scored a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames to go back ahead. In the fourth, Spilborghs hit a two-out double and scored on Olivo’s base hit.

Gonzalez hit a one-out homer to right in the fifth for a 4-3 Rockies lead. Smith’s sacrifice fly in the sixth accounted for the final margin.

Jimenez improved to 5-0 in five home starts this season...The Blue Jays have hit a league-leading 99 homers this year... Toronto swept a three-game series at home the last time it played Colorado in June of 2007. The Rockies, though, did sweep a three-game set at Coors Field over the Blue Jays the previous season in the club’s only other meeting in Colorado...The Blue Jays are 109-124 in interleague play, while the Rockies are 97-100.
