Sage Rosenfels Got Fewer Mini-Camp Snaps Than a Guy Named R.J. Archer. Ouch.

Poor Sage Rosenfels. Not that he’s ever been a clear standout at his position, but the guy had served as a journeyman backup for the better part of his career, only to perform decently once given the chance with the Houston Texans in 2007 and 2008. When the Vikings got him after those two years of trying early in 2009, it seemed as though Sage would finally get the chance to shine as a true no. 1 quarterback for a talented club.↵↵At the time of the trade, it was thought that Rosenfels immediately became the presumptive favorite to win the team’s starting quarterback job. That was, of course, until Brad Childress saw that the Vikings could get Brett Favre. It’s safe to assume if you follow the NFL, you know how things worked out from there.↵
↵↵Well, even if Favre should decide to return yet again, things might still not open up for Rosenfels, considering the quarterback received fewer reps at the Vikings three-day mini-camp than two rookies, one drafted in the 6th round and another who went undrafted, casting doubt that the 10-year veteran the team acquired for a 4th round pick will still be with the team when training camp opens in late July.↵
↵↵⇥Eyebrows were raised a bit Saturday when Rosenfels unofficially received only six snaps during 11-on-11 drills in two practices. But it was downright startling when he did not take one snap during 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 red-zone segments in Sunday’s final hourlong session. Tarvaris Jackson worked with the first team, Webb with the second unit and R.J. Archer took the third-team reps.↵↵↵Childress begged off questions regarding Rosenfels’ future status, saying he simply was going through rotations to get a better sense of his options under center, though it was clear from his brusque refusal of comment that Sage isn’t seeing things exactly the same way. Childress is notorious for wanting to develop talent that he himself discovered early, which gives you an idea why Tarvaris Jackson lasted at starter as long as he did. It’s possible that right now Childress is looking for his next such passer to promote when Favre finally hangs them up.↵
