World Cup 2010, Uruguay Vs. South Africa: Diego Forlan Goal Keeps La Celeste In Control At Half

Diego Forlan, playing in a withdrawn role from forwards Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, has been the dominant player of the first half, creating scoring opportunities for La Celeste and adding the team’s first goal of the tournament.

Forlan’s goal from 22 yards out resulted from a deflection, sending the ball looping over South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune for the match’s only goal.

Beyond scoring, Forlan in his different role his added vitality to the Uruguay attack. Always a forward that will drop back from an advanced position, Forlan is being used as a full-fledged supporting striker against Uruguay. The result has seen Forlan with a lot of the ball and Uruguay with better passing and movement.

South Africa went the first half without a shot on goal.
