Jon Fitch Will Go To 185lbs IF Koscheck Beats St. Pierre

In a statement of what I guess could be considered team solidarity, Jon Fitch told Sportsnet’s Joe Ferraro that he will move up to the middleweight division IF Josh Koscheck wins the welterweight title later this year, and defends it. So just to be clear, nothing happens unless Koscheck wins a fight with Georges St. Pierre, AND another title fight after that. Quite the parlay. I might have him buy me some lottery tickets, somebody’s feeling lucky!

Fitch, of course, is picking Koscheck to win, which as a teammate is all he’s really bound to say. Instead, he went on to marginalize St. Pierre’s win, saying the fight was actually closer than it appeared. All I remember was GSP sitting on Koscheck’s head, punching him from between his legs the last minuet of the second round.

“The first fight, Koscheck lost the fight to a takedown. He won the first round, lost the second round and in the third he shoots a single, switches of to a double and Georges is able to defend it and sprawl and Josh has to pull guard,” Fitch said. “That was the deciding factor in that fight, so it will be interesting to see where this fight goes now. I don’t know if will be as much of a wrestling match as it was the first time. There might be a lot more striking involved. It’s a tough fight and its an interesting fight, but I think Koscheck’s gonna win it.”

You can watch the whole fight right here, but please let me know if you find the round Koscheck won. Other than the final minuet of round one, Kos was utterly dominated on the ground. Since GSP was pretty successful with his wrestling transitioning to controlling the top position, I have a feeling we’ll see more of the same.

Fitch also made it clear that he would never fight Koscheck, and would be willing to move up in weight to avoid doing so.

“To me there’s no reason to fight a teammate. It’s just not a fight we’re interested in at all,” Fitch explained. “It’s a situation where, if Koscheck is able to win the belt and defend the belt, I will move up to 185. I think I have a good size frame. I can put on 15 pounds. I may have to take a month off or so to put on some weight, but that process may take over a year from now. I’ll have fought every welterweight worth fighting by then.”

I wouldn’t be stocking up on ’MEGA GAIN’ just yet, Jon.

This whole thing is pretty ridiculous. He’s not going to have to worry about fighting Koscheck, because he’s not going to win. Moving out of the top 2-3 spots in a division for the sake of a teammate is insane, and even more nonsensical when that teammate is Josh Koscheck. Even if by some bizarre event where I renounce my faith in humanity and he beats GSP, Dana could have these two dance an Irish jig with the snap of his fingers. Having a lot of F U money will do that, just ask this guy.
