Koman Coulibaly’s Phantom Call Cost U.S. a World Cup Win

↵↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵⇥↵↵

↵This is probably a goal. There's no glaring offsides on the play, no obvious foul by an American, and a ball rocketed into the back of the net. Except in the 2-2 tie the USMNT and Slovenia played today, it wasn't.↵

↵

↵It's no wonder that Koman Coulibaly, the game's referee, is already being raked over the coals.↵

↵

↵↵

↵

↵The above is an older revision of Coulibaly's Wikipedia page; if you can't read the small text, it says "Scientifically proven the worst referee of the century. The worst." That might be an opinion both teams' supporters' share, and it certainly reflects more than the goal. Slovenia got four yellow cards, including three in a six-minute span of the second half. A handball yellow on Robbie Findley in the first half—his second of the tournament, which would rule him out for the U.S.'s last Group C match against Algeria—was proven wrong by replay.↵

↵

↵There's a place and time to reflect on FIFA's referee selection process; this isn't it, and Coulibaly's going to bear the brunt of the scorn because of it. (This screenshot, full of awfulness, is probably the worst we'll see on Wikipedia.) But he made several mistakes. His job brings public criticism with it. And he's probably not going to be sleeping well for a while.↵

↵

↵Hopefully, those currently incensed with his performance can let that insomnia—and, likely, never working a World Cup match again—be the extent of Coulibaly's punishment.↵
