It took all of one inning for Florida St. to feel the pain of the TCU bats. The bottom of the first inning started with a pair of Horned Frog singles, then Jason Coats, who leads TCU with a .375 batting average and 68 RBI, smacked a double down the left field line that scored two. A single, double and single later, TCU had five runs in the inning.
2010 College World Series: TCU Jumps On Florida St., 5-1
Oh yeah, Florida St. scored a run of their own on an error in the first, but that seems like quite a while ago.
Being behind in the first inning is usually not so concerning. After all, it is the first game of the College World Series and Sean Gilmartin, the FSU starting pitcher, could have struggled with his nerves. The problem is that Gilmartin didn’t have great stuff in the first inning. His fastball didn’t have much pop and his breaking pitch lacked depth. All of that while being unable to hit his spots on the outer half of the plate, while never being particularly good on the inner half. If it were just the first inning, it wouldn’t be a concern, but this stuff has plagued him all year.
With Gilmartin struggling, a powerful TCU offense and an offense of their own that while strong, is not the powerhouse of years’ past, Florida St. is in some trouble early on here.
