Matt Stafford Zings Tony Romo, But Let’s Not Go Nuts About It

As golfers go, Matt Stafford is a heck of a quarterback. That is to say, his game on the links is somewhat lacking. Still, with a handicap of 10, he’s respectable enough for a duffer. At least he can hold his own in comparison to some of his teammates, like offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus, who nearly hooked a shot into his Cadillac Escalade during a quick golf lesson with pro Bob Krause following Tuesday’s Lions practice.↵↵That Stafford will likely never be the top golfer among the NFL Quarterback Club sits fine with him. If anything, he wants to believe that’s indicative of his commitment on the field.↵
↵↵⇥As for Stafford’s golf aspirations? Well, he says he’s no Tony Romo, the Cowboys quarterback who’ll play in a sectional qualifier next week for the U.S. Open.↵⇥↵⇥“No, I just enjoy playing,” Stafford said. “He’s a lot better than I am.”↵⇥
↵⇥↵⇥It doesn’t have to stay that way, does it?↵⇥
↵⇥↵⇥“It does,” he said, smiling as he motioned to the practice field behind him. “Because I spend too much time here.”↵⇥
↵↵↵OH SNIZ-APS! NO HE DI-INT!↵
↵↵Of course, were we mining for scandal, we could claim that Stafford was calling Romo out, but that’s obviously not the case. In addition to being a better golfer, Romo is clearly the better quarterback of the two at the moment. Yes, Stafford’s dig at Romo is can easily be interpreted as slightly pointed, but it’s true that with the amount of progress that Stafford still needs to make that he can’t afford to have his mind on other athletic pursuits beside football. Stafford spoke the truth about his own game, but tweaked it enough to make a playful jest about Romo’s offseason hobby. No harm done.↵
↵↵But if he brings up Cabo, then, however, we’ll drop all pretense and proclaim that the rivalry is on.↵
