Recently the NFL talked publicly about their discussions regarding an enhanced schedule that includes 18 regular season games and two preseason games.
Poll: What Do You Think About The NFL’s Proposal Of An 18-Game ‘Enhanced’ Season?
From the NFL’s perspective, there are several reasons for wanting this but ultimately it appears to come down to money. Moving to a longer schedule, would increase the pie for everyone. The NFL would also be able to play more games internationally increasing the reach of their brand. This has been something the league has expressed interest in.
Commissioner Roger Goodell recently said that in the event they go to an 18-game schedule, a few changes are likely to occur.
You specifically mentioned training camp and offseason. There could be anything from roster sizes to injured reserve rules to something that focuses on the offseason and training camp. It’s clear the fans don’t want four preseason games. It’s clear the players don’t want four preseason games. They tell me that all the time.
One of the players. Bears LB Lance Briggs, said he wouldn’t be opposed to a longer season, mainly because of the uselessness of preseason games.
“I’ll take an 18-game schedule over four preseason games where we all get paid is $1,100 a game,” Briggs told the Tribune. “Yes, absolutely, I think that players who are going out there are under-compensated for the work that we put out there on the field in the preseason. …
“I think there are more positives to (an 18-game schedule) than there are negatives. But in order for that to happen, it is going to change some of the dynamics of how we play, or how our coaches choose to coach these guys.”
Meanwhile, players like Tom Brady and Ray Lewis have issued a few concerns with the proposal. Official reps from the NFLPA haven’t ruled out the possibility but did voice a few concerns, including the risk of injury, post-career health care and extra compensation.
Some players are on board while some aren’t. It appears to be a split decision with some people. Tell us what you think in the poll below.
