Cilic made the semifinals of the 2010 Australian Open, notching enormous wins over Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick, but has struggled for the last several months.
Cilic’s loss (plus the earlier loss of No. 17 seed Ivan Ljubicic) makes the road to the quarterfinals significantly easier for No. 5 Andy Roddick, who could have faced either in the fourth round.
