With the two teams even on points at the top of Group A coming into the match, Uruguay held a goal difference advantage over Mexico, but Suarez’s goal means that Uruguay would now have to concede twice in order to drop into second place and a likely Round of 16 match with Argentina.
Mexico, on the other hand, now only have a two goal lead in difference over South Africa, with the teams currently slated to finish even on points in Group A. South Africa is up 2-0 over France in Group A’s other match, with the French playing a man down after Yoann Gourcuff’s red card.
