World Cup 2010, Nigeria Vs. South Korea: Asian Tigers Cancel-Out Early Eagles Goal

An early defensive error from South Korea put the Nigerians on the board early, but South Korea has come back and, with great set piece execution and some help from the post, go into halftime tied 1-1 with Nigeria.

Kalu Uche got Nigeria on the board in the 12th minute when he beat right back Cha Du-Ri to a Chidi Odiah cross, right footing a ball past Jung Sung-Ryong for the opening goal.

Uche almost put Nigeria up 2-0, with a shot from 24 yards out in the middle of the half squarely hitting the right post after beating Jung.

All the while, South Korea has been creating opportunities in the Nigeria end, using their movement within the Nigeria line to create chances. Most of those changes can been restricted to poor angles from wide of goal, like Park Chu-Young’s 24th minute chance.

South Korea was also creating set piece opportunities, converting one in the 38th minute to tie the score.

And in-swinging ball from Ki Sung-Yueng from the left flank found defender Lee Jung-Soo at the first half, with Lee directed the ball back across goal and into the side netting for an equalizer. It was Lee’s second goal of the tournament, having previously scored against Greece.

South Korea’s held 55 percent of the possession, putting three shots on goal. Nigeria has two shots.

If results hold, South Korea will advance along with Argentina out of Group B into the knockout stage.
