The promising and hard-throwing Dustin McGowan was knocked out way back in July 2008 with damage to his rotator cuff and labrum. After fighting through a number of setbacks, there was some hope a few months ago that McGowan would be able to return for the stretch run in 2010, but then last week he heard a pop in his shoulder during a rehab appearance, and arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews revealed some bad news:
Dustin McGowan Out Until At Least 2011 Following Shoulder Surgery
Anthopoulos: Dr. Andrews found "significant tear" in McGowan's rotator cuff. Surgery repaired damage. No throwing for 4-6 months.
McGowan is now finished for 2010, and Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos leaves open the possibility that he may not even be able to return in 2011. It's just another unfortunate setback for a four-pitch righty who could gun his fastball into the high 90s.
