Mike Chiappetta has an interesting piece over at MMAFighting about an issue much discussed recently in women’s MMA, the utter dominance of Cris “Cyborg” Santos. The betting lines on Santos are anywhere from -2500 to -1600, but she is undoubtedly the favorite across the board. Just so we’re clear, that means someone would have to bet anywhere from $2500 to $1600, depending on the final line, to win $100. Even Fedor, a -600 favorite over Fabricio Werdum, doesn’t even come close. So where does this stack up in MMA history?
Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos -2500 For Title Fight With Jan Finney
Cyborg’s dominant performances and 9-1 record, along with Finney’s lackluster one at 8-7, certainly help these lines along, but how often do we see a title fight with these kinds of odds? Georges St. Pierre’s first title defense against Matt Serra back in 2007 saw some pretty rough odds of -1300 in favor of GSP, but it also led to the biggest upset in MMA history, with Serra walking away with the strap after a first round TKO. A win by Finney on Saturday would surmount Serra’s miracle, at least odds wise.
This is actually pretty incredible. To have a title fight in 2010 where one fighter is so heavily favored? I can’t think of a more pure example of supremacy as female athletes go. Is she the most dominant female athlete of all time? Way too soon to tell, but I would potentially put her right up on that mantle along Babe Zaharias, Martina Navratilova, and Billie Jean King.
If you haven’t seen this video, by all means. This poor gentleman learned the hard way that he’ll probably never be a champion.
