This was bound to happen.
When you ask your readers to weigh in on the worst team in the NFL for the upcoming season, some feathers are bound to get ruffled.
However, I never expected that ruffling to lead to almost 400 comments. It all started out fine and achieving the goal I wanted (to intelligently discuss why another team is worse than another).
The thread is a prime example of why a blogging platform based solely on fan opinion is great (and terrible).
The inevitability of homeristic tendencies
As stated, the idea behind the post was simply to determine a ranking of the worst teams in the NFL this season to make a mock draft. Truth be told, it was sort of a success.
Based on the voting, which I didn’t partake, the first three picks in the draft order should be Buffalo, St. Louis and Cleveland.
After that, the whole thing went to hell becoming a slap fight between tunnel vision fans. Why is my team even mentioned? My team is better than your team. Your team is the joke of the league. My team can do no wrong, ever.
The hope when I took over Mocking the Draft is that the site would be a little different from the other SB Nation sites. What we’re fans of here is the NFL Draft. An event, not a team. So the idea in my head is that MTD shoulbd be an unbiased site where people can intelligently discuss football.
It’s apparent that’s not always the case.
