The Fan Billboard Crusade Now Targets Lane Kiffin

In recent years, the fan billboard fundraising gimmick has typically been done to achieve a practical aim: to protest an owner or to campaign for a player, coach or general manager to be hired or fired. Usually such moves are nothing more than large hollow gestures, but they do allow fans to convince themselves they can quickly effect change.↵

↵↵But the practice needn’t be confined to the aforementioned functions. Sometimes, fans - maybe those from Tennessee - just want to gloat to a former coach who jilted their team in favor of another when his new team begins falling apart. Schadenfreude should be the force behind more of our country’s outdoor advertisements. A cause can be an easy way to get money from supporters, but a taunt will have them enjoying their outlay slightly more.↵

↵↵To that end, Tony Basilio, a radio host at Knoxville ESPN Radio, is working to raise $5,600 to get a billboard taunting Lane Kiffin up in Los Angeles for the month of August. The billboard, alluding to the recently imposed postseason ban placed on USC by the NCAA, bears the crowing taunt, “Got sanctions? Enjoy your dream job, Lane.”↵

↵↵The host is soliciting PayPal donations on his website. He claims to already have an arrangement set up for a space, and now only needs to raise the necessary funds.↵
