No. 6 Robin Soderling defeated No. 25 Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 to book his spot in the second week of a grand slam for the fifth time in the last six.
Wimbledon: No. 6 Robin Soderling Beats No. 25 Thomaz Bellucci In Straight Sets
Soderling is serving incredibly well and hitting his groundstrokes hard and deep, a combination which will certainly serve him well on these fast grass courts.
Soderling, a two-time French Open finalist, seemed to get tight near the end of the match, and faced three break points in his service. Bellucci graciously tightened as well, making several poor errors in his final return game, and then losing his serve in the set’s twelfth game to end the match.
This is only Soderling’s second time into the second week at Wimbledon, the first coming last year. This time, however, his road in the second week appears to be way more manageable, facing the winner of Chardy-David Ferrer in the fourth round instead of Roger Federer like he did last year. Soderling should be the heavy favorite in that match, and if he advances potentially faces No. 2 Rafael Nadal in what would be an epic and contentious quarterfinal.
