World Cup 2010, Uruguay Vs. South Korea: Luis Suarez Brace Puts Uruguay Into Final Eight

Luis Suarez’s second and third goals of the tournament have put Uruguay through to the final eight despite Lee Chung-Yong become the first player to score against La Celeste this tournament. The goal, a set piece conversion in the 68th minute, came between Suarez’s eighth and 80th minutes goals, drastically different tallies.

Suárez’s first came after an excellent ball from the left of attack from Diego Forlán caught Jung Sung-Pyong ill-positioned, with Suárez, unmarked at the far post, able to put Uruguay ahead early.

Suarez’s final goal was all his doing, taking a ball from Nicolas Lodiero at the left of the penalty area, taking one touch toward the center of the pitch before letting a curling shot go against the far post and in for the match winner.

The goal settled match which that saw Uruguay play conservatively between Suarez’s eighth minute tally and Lee’s goal, allowing South Korea to dominate possession as they tried to break-open the match on the counter. After Lee equalized, Uruguay regained control of the match, with Suarez’s second goal culminating play from a corner kick.

The win puts Uruguay into the quarterfinals, destined for their best finish since reaching the semifinals of Mexico 1970.

South Korea leaves the competition having reached the knockout stage for the second time in their nation’s history.
