Today’s Uruguay-South Korea match was an excellent start to the World Cup’s knockout stage. After Luis Suarez put in a long, bouncing cross in the eighth minute, Uruguay seemed likely to rout the Koreans, but a half of stout defending kept the score 1-0 until the half. Then, in the second half, Uruguay dropped back, let South Korea attack, and eventually paid the price, as a header from Lee Chung-Yong equalized in the 68th minute. From there, the South American side opened it up again. And Suarez worked some magic.

That’s a finish of absolute quality, as the British would say. (ESPN announcer Robbie Mustoe called it “absolutely magnificent technique.“) And it finished the Koreans off: Uruguay won by that 2-1 score, and earned the first ticket to the quarterfinals of this World Cup.
