Report: Jennifer Capriati Hospitalized For “Apparent Overdose”

TMZ.com is reporting that Jennifer Capriati has been rushed to a hospital in Florida after what is being called an “apparent OD.”
Capriati, now 34, burst onto the tennis scene at only 14, making the French Open semifinals in 1990. Appearances in the semifinals of Wimbledon and the US Open in 1991, as well as winning the Women’s Singles gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, were the highlights of her early career.
Burnt out, she took a long hiatus from the sport in the mid-nineties which included an arrest for marijuana possession.
Her life has often been seen as a cautionary tale as to the possible consequences of rushing children into professional sports.
Largely in response to the difficulties Capriati suffered, the WTA has since instituted age limits, which restrict teenage players to only competing in a smaller number of tournaments.
But Capriati later experienced a fairytale comeback, winning three grand slams and reaching the No. 1 ranking in the WTA.
Capriati is still the most recent player to have gotten half-way to a calendar year grand slam, having won the Australian Open and French Open back to back in 2001 before losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to Justine Henin.
Capriati also defended her Australian Open title successfully in 2002 for what would be her third and final grand slam title.
Due to injury, Capriati has not competed since the fall of 2004, though she never officially retired from the sport.
