Barcelona Give Thierry Henry Permission To Leave Club

It’s still a mystery whether Thierry Henry has actually signed with Red Bull New York or not. However, a transfer to the MLS or anywhere else, for that matter, became a lot more realistic today. Barcelona, Henry’s current club, have given him permission to leave the team even though he has a year remaining on his contract.

The writing seemed be on the wall for Henry’s exit last month when Barcelona added Valencia striker David Villa to their attacking ranks, pushing the 32-year-old being Villa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and youngster Bojan Krkic.

The La Liga champions’ director general Joan Oliver said, “It was a special position with the player and we have accepted.

“For Barca it is not a bad agreement because we avoid paying him next season.”

Depending which way you look at it, this is both good and bad news for the French striker. Henry didn’t see the pitch very often last season as he struggled to find form and favor with Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola. Following the season, Henry was part of the French team that crashed and burned in embarrassing fashion in South Africa leading to a national investigation. This most recent development just continues a poor last couple months for the soccer legend. However, Henry will have an opportunity to resurrect his storied career. While it seems likely that he’ll end up in New York, it has been rumored that West Ham of the English Premier League also have strong interest in acquiring the services of the 32-year-old striker.

Should Henry leave Barcelona, it will be his fifth professional club. He has previously played for Monaco, Juventus and Arsenal - where he captained the London side for his final two seasons.
