MMA Junkie is reporting that the oft postponed rematch between two of the UFC’s top welterweight contenders is finally ready to go. Thiago Alves (16-6) and Jon Fitch (22-3) have been slated as the co-main event for UFC 117 August 6th in Oakland. The event will be headlined by the middleweight championship bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen.
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch Set For Co-Main Event At UFC 117
Fitch and Alves first tangled in 2006, with Alves dropping a second-round TKO loss. Due to a myriad of health issues, he hasn’t competed since his five-round decision defeat to Georges St. Pierre in July of 2009.
Fitch, meanwhile, is riding a four fight win streak in the UFC, his only loss being to the welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. This fight will likely produce the next top contender for GSP, that is if he survives his next title defense to Josh Koscheck.
