Reliever Erik Goeddel pitched a scoreless seventh inning, dodging a two-out single by Christian Walker. UCLA takes their 1-0 lead into the top of the eighth inning over South Carolina. Freshman Tyler Webb started the inning for the Gamecocks to start the inning, but has been replaced by John Taylor after recording one out.

South Carolina reliever Jose Mata got out of a first-and-third, one out, jam without UCLA scoring additional runs, keeping the Gamecocks within one run and showing that Rob Rasmussen isn’t the only pitching escape artist in this game. Eric Goeddel is now in the game for the Bruins...let’s see if he can follow up Rasmussen’s performance. The sophomore reliever has a 3.12 ERA in 49 innings this season.

Rob Rasmussen worked out of a first-and-third jam without damage in the bottom of the fifth, keeping the Bruins on top 1-0. This game still has a strong “could turn on a dime” feeling to it. Jose Mata (2.51 ERA) is now pitching for South Carolina in the top of the sixth.
