Chase Utley Headed To 15-Day DL With Thumb Sprain

Chase Utley, who jammed his thumb sliding into second base in the Phillies' 7-3 loss on Monday, underwent an MRI on the injured digit on Tuesday, and the early results are not good: ESPN's Jerry Cransick is reporting (via SB Nation's Phillies blog The Good Phight) that along with Placido Polanco, Utley will be put on the 15-day disabled list today.

“It looked like it’s a sprain, that’s all we know for now,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Tuesday.

Utley stayed in the game Monday night, but was eventually replaced by a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning.

The Phillies called up Brian Bocock and Greg Dobbs from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace the two recently injured infielders.

The Good Phight is already calling this the “Infield Armageddon.” Or, reacting quite appropriately, really:

It's obviously a huge blow for the Phils, who have scuffled to a 40-34 record and 3rd place in the NL East thus far this year. And the move comes just as Jimmy Rollins has made his way back from a pair of lengthy DL stints after some calf problems. Even if he's able to stay healthy (and avoid this nightmare lineup), the fact remains that Charlie Manuel is going to have to run out some combination of Wilson Valdez, Juan Castro and Greg Dobbs to plug the gap. And did I mention that Carlos Ruiz is on the DL right now too?

With the additions of Utley and Polanco, the Phillies now have seven players on the DL (catcher Carlos Ruiz, and pitchers Ryan Madson, Antonio Bastardo, J.A. Happ and Chad Durbin), including three of the eight position players from their Opening Day roster (Ruiz is eligible to return on Saturday).
