On April 21st, Placido Polanco entered play batting .397. Then he got beaned in the elbow by Tim Hudson, and since then, nothing's been quite right. Though Polanco's still batted .299 since the injury, his elbow has bothered him enough to force him out of action from time to time, and he's acknowledged that he'll probably need offseason surgery to remove the bone spur that's developed. And after a weekend cortisone shot apparently didn't help enough, Polanco will now be placed on the DL to rest up.
Elbow Injury Knocks Placido Polanco To DL As Phillies’ Infield Gets Double Whammy
Double whammy for the Phillies: Team is expected to place both Chase Utley and Placido Polanco on the DL later Tuesday.
The DL stint won't heal Polanco's elbow, but it will give him a breather. The bad news is that this is simultaneous with Utley landing on the DL as well, meaning that three-fifths of the Phillies' usual starting infield - Polanco, Utley, and Carlos Ruiz - is currently on the disabled list. One injury can be dealt with, but many injuries can be a nightmare for a team trying desperately to compete.
