Ken Griffey Jr. may have announced his retirement rather suddenly and ridden off into the sunset with nary a camera catching footage, but he isn’t gone forever. He’ll be back - both to give fans their opportunity to recognize his achievements, and to hold a long-term job.

SEATTLE -- Ken Griffey Jr. will be back with Seattle in the near future working with the team in a long-term job to be determined, according to the agent for the now-retired Mariners slugger.

He said Griffey’s new role is going to be long term. Goldberg said it’s unlikely to be one that has Griffey in uniform daily as a coach, at least initially.Goldberg said the actual role for Griffey will be settled after the 40-year-old and the Mariners exchange “wish lists” of what they want his role to be.
A number of players stay involved in the game even after their playing careers have ended, but with Griffey, no one was quite sure. It’s certainly easy to see the appeal from both sides - Griffey has a plan post-retirement, and the Mariners get to have one of the all-time icons serve as an organizational ambassador.
Griffey will also return at some point during the 2010 season for an official retirement ceremony, to be held at Safeco Field.
