Jeff Gordon confirmed Friday that he swapped cars with Toyota driver Marcos Ambrose at this week’s Watkins Glen tire test, an eyebrow-raiser in that Gordon is a longtime Chevrolet driver.

Gordon said both he and Ambrose had approval from their respective manufacturers before making the move. The swap was first reported by Jenna Fryer of the Associated Press.
But in a not-so-subtle shot at Toyota, Gordon said he learned that Ambrose’s speed at road courses is “not his race car.”
“He’s just really fast,” Gordon said. “He got in my car and went really fast. I got in his car and went slow. It was just basically that Marcos is fast – and that we’ve got really good power (with the Chevrolet engine). That’s what I learned.”
Gordon said the manufacturers approved the swap because it was a test and there as an opportunity to learn something about another team.
“Our Chevys haven’t been as good as we felt like they needed to be, so just gathering information,” Gordon said. “Plus I like Marcos. He’s a good guy and a heck of a road-course racer.”
