Virginia Town Wishes To Adopt Name Of Nationals’ Potential Savior

With Stephen Strasburg’s Major League debut just days away, the hype machine is working overtime to let us know that he will indeed be the be-all, end-all of human creation. There’s just no two ways about it. Strasburg will redefine the way we think about baseball and ourselves.↵

↵↵Naturally, then, a town named Strasburg, Virginia should just go the whole hog and switch its name to Stephen Strasburg, Virginia. That way they will remind the world that Stephen Strasburg, pitcher of legend, is worthy of a town bearing his name. The site renamestrasburg.com redirects visitors to a Facebook campaign urging the town council to rename the town in the pitcher’s honor should he decide to grace the roughly 4,000 residents with his presence.↵

↵↵According to the Facebook page, the idea was conceived by ESPN Page 2 writer Shane Igoe, whose parents once lived there. Already, one town council member is said to be on board. And why not? The change could potentially create a quick and cheap boast in tourism dollars. In the slight chance that Strasburg never becomes the phenom everyone just assumes he will be, however, the change will forever serve as an embarrassment to residents, who will be forced to relocate elsewhere out of shame. I mean, it’s not like there have been can’t-miss pitching prospects that have turned into busts in the past.↵
