It’s common knowledge, even to non-baseball fans, that Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak is the longest in major league history. The Division-I college record, however, is held by Robin Ventura (58 games), and Florida International infielder Garrett Wittels is giving him a run for his money.
Garrett Wittels Extends Hitting Streak To 56 Games, Approaches Division-I Record
On Saturday, Wittels extended his hitting streak to 56 games -- two games away from tying Ventura’s record, and three from breaking it. Florida International is currently attempting to extend its life in the 2010 NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament; if they do, Wittels’ streak can resume without a hitch.
A fellow college player, Kevin Pillar, pieced together a 54-game hitting streak this season before seeing it snapped.
As an aside, the professional record is owned by Joe Wilhoit, who managed a 69-game hitting streak in 1919 while playing for the minor-league Wichita Jobbers.
