The annual off-season quest of Tony Romo to qualify for the U.S. Open has proven unsuccessful yet again. The Cowboys quarterback withdrew from the sectional qualifier Monday after it was delayed a second time because of bad weather.
Tony Romo’s U.S. Open Bid Ends Just As The First Four Did
Play is scheduled to resume tomorrow on the second 18-hole round of the 36-hole qualifier, but Romo had vowed not to miss any Cowboys practice time because of golfing pursuits. And the team has a scheduled an organized team activity Tuesday.
It’s just as well. After being in the thick of the race to advance after the first 18 holes with a finish of 1 under (he was just three strokes off a top 2 finish needed to advance), Romo suffered a quadruple bogey on the first hole of the second round and had fallen to 7 over when play was called.
Don’t feel too glum for Romo. There at least was some progress this go-round. This year marked the first time in his five attempts to qualify for the Open that Romo even advanced to the sectional round. No doubt next year he will renew his mission to become only the fourth athlete from a professional team sport to qualify for the U.S. Open, the other three being former 49ers quarterback John Brodie, former Yankees outfielder Sam Byrd and former NHL player Bill Ezinicki.
