Bruised Collarbone Rules Portugal’s Nani Out Of 2010 World Cup

Portugal winger Nani, coming of a strong end to his club season at Manchester United, has been ruled out of the 2010 World Cup with a bruised left collarbone, the Portuguese soccer federation confirmed on Tuesday.

Benfica Ruben Amorim has replaced the 23-year-old attacker in Portugal’s World Cup squad, and any placing time Nani was scheduled to get is now expected to revert back to Simão.

Nani has accumulated 36 caps and seven goals for the Selecçao since he debuted in 2006. The Cape Verde-born Portuguese scored four goals in 23 league appearances for Manchester United, featuring prominently on the left side of United’s attack at year’s end.

Nani suffered the injury in Portugal's June 1 friendly against Cameroon yet managed to finish the match after coming on in the second half. The injury was unresponsive to treatment in the days that followed, ruling the Portuguese out of of his first World Cup.
