Switzerland Could Be Without Captain Alexander Frei For World Cup 2010

Switzerland's 2008 European Championships turned when captain Alexander Frei suffered a knee injury in the tournament's opening match, costing the co-hosts their talisman and best goal scorer. That turn of events in mind, today's news that Frei may miss World Cup 2010 through injury sounds bitterly familiar.

Switzerland will announce later today if an ankle injury, suffering in training on Wednesday, could cost their captain his World Cup. The injury occurred on a tackle from defender Steve von Bergen, and with the Swiss soon to leave for South Africa, Frei has become a major doubt.

Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will hold a press conference later today announcing Frei’s status.
