On Saturday, the Tour de France continued its trek through eastern France, and Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel took Stage 7 by a 57-second margin. This is Chavanel’s second stage win of the 2010 Tour, and he now sits in first place overall.

The Tour resumes on Sunday with a mountainous, 189-kilometer path to Morzine-Avoriaz. Our cycling blog, Podium Cafe, says that while Chavanel generated plenty of excitement on Stage 7, he isn’t likely to retain the yellow jersey for more than a day.

Chavanel, a French classics stud riding for the Belgian Quick Step machine, has given the home fans something to really cheer about: his second stage and a second turn in the leader’s jersey. Last time the joy ride only lasted 24 hours, and this time will probably be no different. But his teammate Jerome Pineau made more lasting progress in his own classification play, the KOM competition, and looks to hold the polka dot jersey for a while.

The general classification after Saturday’s results:

  1. Chavanel
  2. Cadel Evans, BMC, at 1.25
  3. Ryder Hesjedal, Garmin-Transitions, at 1.32
  4. Andy Schleck, Saxo Bank, at 1.55
  5. Alexandre Vinokourov, Astana, at 2.17
  6. Alberto Contador, Astana, at 2:26
  7. Jurgen Van Den Broeck, Omega Pharma, at 2:28
  8. Nicholas Roche, AG2R, at 2:28
  9. Johan Van Summeren, Garmin, at 2:33
  10. Denis Menchov, Rabobank, at 2:35
