Stage 8 of the Tour de France -- a mountainous stage that wrapped around Lake Geneva -- was won by Team Saxo Bank’s Andy Schleck. Meanwhile, Lance Armstrong’s Sunday wasn’t much fun. From our cycling blog, Podium Cafe:

Armstrong’s day turned sour at the foot of the first major climb, where a crash on a roundabout ripped off his saddle, shredded his jersey and some flesh, and left him going full gas to regain contact. He did, but things quickly fell apart on the Col de la Ramaz, and by the middle of the climb to Avoriaz he’d more or less given up.

The general classification was significantly shaken up on Sunday. Here is how things stand at the top after Stage 8:

  1. Evans
  2. Schleck, at 0.20
  3. Contador, at 1.01
  4. Van den Broeck, at 1.03
  5. Menchov, at 1.10
  6. Ryder Hesjedal, Garmin-Transitions, at 1.11
  7. Kreuziger, at 1.45
  8. Leipheimer, at 2.14
  9. Sanchez, at 2.15
  10. Mick Rogers, HTC, at 2.41

Armstrong sits at 39th place, far removed from the head of the pack. On Monday, riders will receive a well-deserved rest before resuming the Tour with Tuesday’s Stage 9.
