From a Sharks perspective, this was a zero-risk, all-reward type move. They either poach a very talented defenseman from the Stanley Cup Champs or they force their biggest Western foe into ponying up a big chunk of change for Hjalmarsson.
The Blackhawks will keep Hjalmarsson now that they’ve matched the offer, but they’re still deep in cap hell and this just makes things worse. Now it’s a question of who the Blackhawks will move. Antti Niemi has yet to sign a contract, while Patrick Sharp and Brian Campbell are both rumored to be on the block as well.
The dismantling of the champs will continue. The cost of winning, apparently.
