Wheels In Motion: Flyers Give Gagne, Agent Permission To Speak With Teams About Trade

It's only a matter of time before Simon Gagne is traded by the Philadelphia Flyers. That process took another step today as the team where Gagne has spent his entire 11-year career gave permission to his agent to speak with teams about a potential trade. That news comes via ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

The Flyers have been shopping Gagne for weeks, reportedly asking him to waive his no-trade clause several weeks ago. Then, last week, Gagne told a group of French media that he hasn’t waived that NTC. Either way, though, Gagne seems resigned to the fact that his career in Philadelphia is likely over.

"The more it goes, and the more we see the chances to stay in Philly are slim," Simon Gagne told CKACSports.com (but, you know, in French)Jul 14 via web

So there you have it, directly from the man himself. Gagne is likely done as a Flyer, and his contract expires at the end of next season, so it’s not as if there’s a gigantic risk for teams trading for him. At the same time, Gagne has a fragile injury history, and Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has hamstrung himself this summer by going over the salary cap.

The leverage the Flyers possess in trade discussions is very slim, so it’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds. Stay with this StoryStream for all the latest updates on Gagne’s future in Philly.
