Superliga 2010 Update: Revolution Revolt, Fire Flame Out Heading Into Group A’s Debut

Superliga 2010 got off to an embarrassing start for the Chicago Fire, with last year’s finalists losing 5-1 to Morelia at Toyota Park. The hosts yielded a goal within four minutes to Elias Hernández, with goals by Luis Angel Rey and Miguel Sabah putting the Monarcas up 3-0 at halftime. A Steven Kinney goal early in the second half was immediately answered by Rafael Márquez, with new Monarch Jaime Lozano’s 70th minute goal giving Morelia a 5-1 win to open Group B play.

For Major League Soccer faithful, the result reversed a strong start to the night that saw the New England earn three points from Pumas. A flying, left-footed finish from Zack Schilawski on an early corner kick gave the Revolution the match’s only goal. The questionable waving-off of a second-half equalizer from Martín Bravo helped maintain the Revolution’s 1-0 victory to open Superliga.

Today, Group A opens play, with Houston hosting Pachuca while Puebla visits Chivas USA. Group B will resume play on Saturday, with Chicago hosting New England prior to Morelia and Pumas - a doubleheader at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.
