2010 British Open At St. Andrews, Second Round: Louis Oosthuizen Shoots 67, Ties 36-Hole Scoring Record

After his 7-under 65 in Thursday’s round one at the 2010 British Open, we labeled Louis Oosthuizen a “little-known South African golfer.” It might be time to learn his name (it’s pronounced “Louie woost-HAY-zen”), because in the second round on Friday, Oosthuizen continued his strong play with a 5-under 67, putting him into the lead at The Open Championship.

Oosthuizen had seven birdies on Friday, including four on the back nine (with three of them sandwiching bogeys on 11 and 13. He’s now 12-under for the tournament, a score (132) that ties the 36-hole record at the British Open, matching Nick Faldo and Greg Norman. So who is he?

Well, you may remember his name from this year’s Masters, when he won the Par-3 Contest. Also, he won his first European Tour event this year at the Open de Andalucia de Golf. Where he is will be quite a different feeling than past majors. In eight major championships previous, Ooosthuizen has made the cut just once, and that ended up being a 73rd place finish at the 2008 PGA Championship.

Some of golf’s heads of state have still yet to tee off, but six of the top 10 on the leaderboard are in the clubhouse with Oosthuizen, who currently holds a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, who’s just beginning his day.

Not bad for a little-known South African golfer.
