Superliga 2010 Update: Houston, Puebla Take 2-1 Wins To Top Of Group A

Houston was able to overcome a shaky night from their defense to register a 2-1 victory over Pachuca, opening Group A play in Superliga 2010. A brace from Danny Ngwenya - his second goal dramatically headed home in the 85th minute - bested Damian Manso’s 51st minute tally to put Houston at the top of the group after one round.

However, Houston coach Dominic Kinnear will have concerns about a defense that was exploited most of the night, allowing Pachuca striker Darío Cvitanich four strong chances on goal. With none of the chances converted, Dynamo fans were left with their own claim to superiority: A second half, Brian Ching goal that was waved-off after a phantom offside call.

Houston is joined at the top of Group A by Puebla, the Camoteros also recording a 2-1 win, getting goals from Nicolás Olivera and Álvaro González. Puebla’s attacking tandem converted goals from counters in the sixth and 62nd minutes, giving the visitors a comfortable lead. Costa Rican Michael Umaña scored a consolation goal late for Chivas USA, who join Pachuca at the bottom of Group A.

Superliga takes Friday off before Group B resumes play on Saturday. Chicago will host New England before Morelia, topping the group, takes on Pumas. Both matches will be played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview ahead of Sunday’s action in Group A.
