Down On The Farm: Baseball America’s Mid-Season Top 25 Prospects

Continuing with our series on Baseball America's Mid-Season Top 25 prospects list, here are my thoughts on a few more of their top 25:

2. Mike Trout-LAA-Trout has taken the minor leagues by storm in his first full season in the minors. Here is what BA had to say about him:

He ranked first in the minors in runs (74), second in batting (.362) and stolen bases (42), was tied for fourth in on-base percentage (.447) and ranks first in scouts' enthusiasm.

He was recently promoted to High A Rancho Cucomonga....in California, and some think he could play in the big leagues right now. I would not be surprised to see Trout in LA in 2012, but 2011 would not surprise me either, as i read somewhere recently that Angels manager Mike Scioscia loves him. Should Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown lose his prospect eligibility this season, I see Trout as the #1 prospect in baseball come spring 2011.

4. Jeremy Hellickson-TB-Hellickson has to be the next prospect called up, as the Rays are looking for an outfield bat, and major league pitcher Wade Davis is probably going to be involved in any deal by the July 31st trade deadline. Hellickson was drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 draft, and is currently 11-2 with a 2.21 ERA and 1.136 WHIP at AAA Durham this season. He has an excellent 104-26 K/BB ratio in 105.2 innings pitched this season.

6. Julio Teheran-ATL-Teheran has established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the minors this season. In 16 starts between Low-A and High-A, Teheran is 5-6 with a 2.35 ERA and a 1/035 WHIP. He also has an excellent 112-23 K/BB ratio in 95.2 innings pitched. He has actually increased his K/9 from 10.3/9 to 10.7/9 since his move to High-A.

Teheran won't see the majors till 2012 at the earliest in my opinion. I am kicking myself for not drafting him in the UBA minor league draft this year.
