Monday’s Roto Roundup: Big Nights From Miggy Cabrera and Mike Stanton
Monday's MLB action saw several pitchers get knocked around including Ubaldo Jimenez, Carlos Silva, Mike Pelfreyand Craig Tillman, with Silva and Pelfrey not making it past the second inning. But, there were some hitting stars on Monday night, lead by MVP candidate Miguel Cabrera who went yard twice and drove in 3 runs. He is now hitting .341-.419-.647 with 24 HRs and 82 RBIs and it is only July 19th.
Marlins outfielder Mike Stanton went 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs on Monday night. His triple slash line for the season-.235-.298-.445- with 6 HRs and 23 RBIs in 119 at bats. Stanton made the jump from AA, so a slow start was expected, but he has made his hits count. His 45-11 K/BB rate will need to improve, but what else did you expect from a power hitting 20 year old?
Pirates rookie third baseman Pedro Alvarez went 0-1 with 3 walks on Monday. What's notable about the 3 walks is he worked two of them off of left-handed pitchers Chris Capuano and Zach Braddock. He has had a slow start to his rookie season, but the walks show he's headed in the right direction.
Dodgers catcher Russell Martin is hitting .241-.342-.328 for the season with 5 HRs, 22 RBIs and 6 SBs. His $5 million salary should be better spend elsewhere in 2011.
Ubaldo Jimenez gave up 6 runs, 4 earned runs, in 5+ innings of work on Monday night. He has given up 4 runs or more in 4 of his last 5 starts, and 22 earned runs in his last 30+ innings pitched. Ubaldo's FIP prior to Monday night's outing was 3.13 and his xFIP was 3.71. That is something to watch as the season gets older.
Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre hit his 15th HR of the season on Monday night, and now his 58 RBIs to go along with his triple slash line of .331-.371-.550. Beltre will be a much sought after free agent at the end of the 2010 season.
Rays starter Wade Davis won his 7th game of the season after going 8 strong innings, giving up one run on 7 hits and a walk. I wonder if this performance helped his trade value or made the Rays front office second guess dealing him for a bat.
Reds outfielder Drew Stubbs went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, a run scored and a SB. Stubbs now has 13 HRs, 48 RBIs and 18 SBs for the season to go along with his .251-.323-.433 triple slash line. He is on pace to go 23-85-32 this season. Not bad for his first full season.
