Strikeforce And Fedor Emelianenko’s Reps Working Out Future Plans

Mike Chiappetta for MMA Fighting is reporting that Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker will be meeting with Fedor Emelianenko’s people sometime this weekend to try to work out details for a possible extension with the promotion. While Fedor’s camp at M1 Global is hoping for an immediate rematch with Fabricio Werdum, the Brazilian doesn’t seem quite as enthusiastic about a rematch as he was immediately following his submission victory earlier this month.

↵With a single fight remaining on his deal with Strikeforce, Chiappetta goes on to highlight the three main points of contention in working out an extension.

↵Emelianenko’s next fight- Although M1 wants the Werdum rematch, Strikeforce isn’t looking so keen on it. Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva are possibilities, but Overeem seems to show more interest in pursuing his own rematch with Werdum stemming off of a 2006 fight, which Werdum won via submission.

↵

Contract Extension- Although Fedor pledged a return, Strikeforce may find itself losing it's biggest superstar if they can't work out an extension. Although Dana White claims to be no longer interested in him, I doubt he wouldn't make some kind of play at Fedor. There's also the possibility for a move back to the land of the rising sun. After Japan-based DREAM and K-1 promoter FEG announced a financing agreement that could rejuvenate Japan's MMA scene, signing a huge star like Emelianenko would be a great first step.

↵

Champion's Clause- Strikeforce will make a hard push making sure an extension would include some sort of a champion's clause. If Fedor were to take the heavyweight championship from Overeem, the clause would keep him from entering free agency while holding the strap. Strikeforce would really like to avoid another embarrassment a la Jake Shields.
