Didier Drogba Finally Undergoes Surgery, To Miss Start Of Chelsea Season

Chelsea will be without their best player to start the 2010-11 season after striker Didier Drogba underwent surgery to correct a groin problem.

The striker had been suffering with the injury since spring; however, Drogba had put off surgery until this point to complete Chelsea's English Premier League season, the FA Cup final, and the World Cup, where he captained Cote d'Ivoire. In preparations for that tournament, Drogba suffered a broken arm in a friendly against Japan, competing in the finals only after undergoing surgery to stabilize the fractured ulna.

There, Drogba scored one goal in three matches as Cote d'Ivoire finished behind Brazil and Portugal in Group G.

During his 2009-10 season for Chelsea, Drogba scored 37 goals in 44 all-competition matches, helping the Blues to a league-cup double.

Now returning from his post-World Cup break, Drogba has finally undergone the procedure and is expected to be out for three weeks. He joins defender Alex (thigh) and goalkeeper Petr Cech (calf) as first team players expected to miss the start of Chelsea’s title defense.

The Blues, however, get some help from the schedule, opening the campaign with matches against West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic, and Stoke City, with Chelsea hosting Brom to start the season on August 14.
